Ugly Baking

Posted on May 20, 2012

I adore baking. I am however afraid that a lot of my baked goods look like a 6 year old made them (to be fair sometimes my 6 year old did).

I have the utmost admiration for my fellow bakers who decorate their offerings as beautifully as if they were pieces of fine art! I however, despite having done cupcake decorating courses, despite subscribing to a cake decorating weekly and despite practising and practising and practising, just can’t be a beautiful baker!

You know what though, there is nothing wrong with ugly baking. Ok, so maybe ugly is a strong word. There is nothing wrong with baking that isn’t so pretty. You know why? Because my baking tastes pretty good (see what I did with ‘pretty’ there?) and not just that, my baking smells pretty good too. So of the five senses, I’m doing pretty well!!

My focus has always been on taste. I enjoy food, I really enjoy eating and I know which flavours work. My baking will always be about taste first, how easy it is to make second, and attractiveness third!

On this point, I have added my ‘Ugly Duckling Jam Bread & Butter Pudding’ to my recipe’s section! As it says, it’s a bit of an ugly looking pudding – especially before it’s baked, but don’t let that put you off! It tastes absolutely delicious! It can easily be made in advance, or even as a dairy free version. Or as an extra treat, replace the jam with nutella…yum yum yum!

In kitchen news….my dreams have been filled with purple and cream gloss….I think I’m going to go for it!

Happy baking
