New Year’s Resolution

Posted on December 30, 2012

So it’s nearly 2013, and what a year 2012 has been!!

I honestly can not believe how much everything has changed since I entered the Cake Club competition on the Lorraine Show.

When I entered the competition I did so because I thought my cake was interesting and different and of course yummy, but I still didn’t expect to be a finalist, let alone win!

The day I got the phone call to tell me I was a finalist, I had literally just picked up my son from school and was rushing to get him to his swimming lesson on time.

The phone conversation went something like this:

‘Hello is this Suzy Pelta?’

‘Yes’

‘Hi Suzy, this is Emily here from the Lorraine Show! I’m really excited to tell you that you are one of our finalists in Lorraine’s Cake Club competition!’

‘No way!!!’

‘Er…yes!’

‘Seriously? Oh wow? Really?!?!?’

‘Yes seriously! The judges thought your cake was really interesting!’

‘You promise this isn’t a wind-up?’

‘I promise.’

‘Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh’

‘Er are you ok?’

‘Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh’

‘Hello?’

‘Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh oh no I’m going to be late for swimming….but I need to talk to you….are you sure this isn’t a wind up? Can you please call me back in half an hour? Oh wow can’t believe this!! Wow!!! Please don’t forget to call me back! This is real isn’t is?’

‘Yes it’s real and I promise I’ll call you back.’

‘Thank you so much, wow, thank you thank you ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!’

‘Er you’re welcome! Ok well bye then and well done! Speak to you in a bit!’

‘Ok bye, thank you, don’t forget to call me back! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!’

I then rushed to the lesson, the whole way saying ‘I don’t believe it….I don’t believe it….’, changed Louis in record time, practically threw him in the pool and rushed out to the waiting area to wait for the call.

I waited.

And waited.

Then the phone rang (a blocked number).

‘Hello!’ I said.

The phone cut off.

Five long minutes later, the phone rang again. It was Emily again from the Lorraine Show. She very patiently assured me several times that this was not a wind up and talked me though what was going to happen now!

The following Tuesday I was filmed at home – talking and baking with my kids. From the Friday onwards, clips from that filming session were shown on ITV to advertise the Cake Club!

The following week I was live in the studio twice. Both times I was picked up very early in the morning and both times I had to take my cake with me! Despite being given an excellent driver, I spent both journeys absolutely convinced that a speed bump or sharp braking would see me going head first into my cake and therefore arriving looking like I had been custard pied!! This (thankfully) did not happen.

And so the rest of the story you know. And now I have my Bake With Suzy baby…which is great because Mr P won’t let me have any more real babies!!!

I guess the moral of me telling you a bit more of my story is just to say that I made a New Year’s resolution this time last year. After many years of horrible illness in my family and an especially difficult 2011 I truly realised how short life is. My resolutions were to try new things, be braver, step out of my comfort zone and take risks. I was the first person to complain about being bored and stuck in a rut, but it took my New Years Resolution to really give me the impetus to make a change and in my case, enter the competition. We never truly know where our path may take us, but unless we give things a go, give it a try, nothing will change.

I wish you a very Happy & Healthy New Year and may all your dreams come true in 2013!!
